Battery stops charging under 100%
Hi everyone, I guess I have the opposite problem as in the other thread where laptop shuts down too soon. My problem the laptop stops charging the battery too soon. It is a brand new battery but it never reaches 100% charge in BB. At some point between 85 - 97% the laptop charging LED turns green instead of amber meaning battery is fully charged and so stops charging and runs on AC. So laptop thinks battery is full charged but BB reports not full charged. Ive tried to recalibrate the battery a couple of times with full discharge but doesnt fix problem. Anybody knows what to do? Thanks -z

RE: Battery stops charging under 100%
That's an interesting problem. It is an OEM battery or a generic battery?

The battery charging is controlled by the BIOS and the smart chip inside the battery. Generally, that would indicate a bad cell or other problem with the battery.

Windows should report the same percent remaining as BatteryBar; is that the case?

It is generic battery and yes same percent in Windows but different time remaining of course (4:30 vs 3:00). I noticed when it stops charging that if I keep taking the plug out and putting it back in that the percent charged creeps up a bit. I was able to go from 93% to 97%. However it was a short-lived victory - a day later it was back to a complete charge at 89% Sad

Oh yes, definately not a software issue as this problem happens when I run the calibration routine in the BIOS setup as well. Probably bad battery as you said. Of course when I spoke to the seller at DS Miller they claimed it is working just fine Dodgy

Really? They are claiming that a battery that stops charging at random capacity levels is normal? Well, I guess you take a risk with the non-name brand batteries, though it's clearly disappointing that there can't be some non-OEM manufacturer out there that can build a decent battery.

RE: Battery stops charging under 100%
My battery stops charging at 57%. This is a "refreshed" HP nx9420 laptop. Very nice computer, but won't charge. Took it back to the store and they claim it is a Windows problem and not the battery. They thought they fixed it but it only went up from 51% to 57%. So, I will have to go back again before the 90 day warranty runs out. What can I suggest to these "experts?"

The BIOS, not Windows, is responsible for managing the battery state. If you want to prove it, boot a Linux LiveCD (like Ubuntu) and see if it charges while not running Windows. I guarantee that it will react the same way.

There's a problem with the battery. My guess is that it's a bad cell in the battery.
